Goodbye, Berlin. Hello, Hong Kong!
IHEC Successfully holds Annual Meeting 2017 in Berlin, Germany.
From 12 to 14 October 2017, epigenomics scientists and funding agency members from around the world came together in Berlin. For the second time the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Epigenome Program (DEEP) had the pleasure to host the annual meeting of the International Human Epigenome Consortium (IHEC) as well as the IHEC “Science Days” Symposium at the Kaiserin Friedrich Haus in the heart of the German capital.
As in the past, the annual meeting day offered various sessions including country updates, working group reports and an engaging discussion on future directions of IHEC. Aiming to further increase collaboration and exchange with other initiatives and consortia in the field as IHEC moves on, this last session of the day also saw inspiring talks by John Marioni (EMBL-EBI) representing the Human Cell Atlas and Ananda Roy (NIH) introducing the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program.
“IHEC has made tremendous progress in the past years generating and providing an outstanding pool of high-quality epigenomic datasets to the global research community. The IHEC Data Portal and the coordinated release of the Cell package last November is impressive testimony to the joint efforts made in this so-called first phase of IHEC. Now that we are entering into IHEC Phase II, we will focus much more on the actual use of these datasets in terms of integrative analyses, interpretation and data assessment”, said Dr Eric Marcotte from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Chair of the IHEC Executive Committee.
The three-day conference also marked the final meeting of DEEP, which joined IHEC in 2012. Complimenting presentations from internationally renowned scientists on their latest findings in epigenomics, the IHEC Science Days offered a number of high-level talks from DEEP scientists highlighting the results and findings of the five-year program.
Saying goodbye to Berlin, the consortium is now looking forward to jointly tackling the future tasks mapped out during the conference, and will meet again in Hong Kong in October 2018.
Presentations and pictures from the conference are now available for IHEC members on the Intranet.
